Kanawha County Man Pleads Guilty To Federal Firearms Offense

CHARLESTON, W.VA.- On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Jason Douglas McComber, 52, of St. Albans, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Joseph R. Goodwin to being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Convicted Felon.
After entering his guilty plea, Judge Goodwin accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for April 22, 2025. At that time, McComber faces up to 15 years in federal prison, at least three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. When sentenced, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offense and McComber’s criminal history.

According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and charging information filed with the court, on June 12, 2023, law enforcement officers found McComber in possession of a Remington Wingmaster 12-gauge shotgun in St. Albans, West Virginia. The shotgun had a modified and shortened. A subsequent records check revealed that the shotgun was not registered to McComber in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record database.
Federal law prohibits a person with a prior felony conviction from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition. McComber knew on June 12, 2023, that he was prohibited from possessing the shotgun due to his prior conviction for possession of a dangerous controlled substance in November 2007, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in June 2014, and illegal firearm transportation in July 2019. The convictions were all out of San Bernardino, California, Superior Court.
