LAKEWOOD, NJ.- Ocean County authorities are continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding a multi-vehicle collision that occurred Friday morning on Route 70 in Lakewood Township, New Jersey, that has left two people hospitalized in critical condition.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, on Friday, March 7, 2025, shortly before 6:00 a.m., members of the Lakewood Township Police Department responded to 911 Emergency Calls reporting a multi-vehicle collision on Route 70 and Airport Road in the Township.

Police Officers Locate Eight Vehicle Crash

Upon arrival, Police Officers and First Responders located the crash involving eight vehicles, with one of the vehicles bursting into flames due to the collision. The drivers of two of the vehicles sustained serious injuries.

A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Vehicle Homicide Squad, the Lakewood Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined that a Cadillac CT5 Blackwing was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of Route 70 at a high rate of speed. The Cadillac crashed head-on into a Mazda CX5 and subsequently struck additional vehicles before coming to a stop.

Following colliding with the other vehicles, the Cadillac caught fire with the driver trapped inside. The driver of the Cadillac was ultimately extracted from the car and airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey, and then transported to Weill Cornell Medicine Burn Center in New York City, and has been listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Mazda CX5 was also airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment and remains in critical condition. The drivers of the remaining vehicles were uninjured in the collision.
