According to Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, on January 21, 2025, Nelson Lata-Sanchez, 23, pleaded guilty before Union County Superior Court Judge Candido Rodriguez, Jr., to one count of first-degree Attempted Murder.

On Friday, April 4, 2025, Judge Rodriguez sentenced Lata-Sanchez to seven years in State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which will require Lata-Sabchez to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.

Police Officers Find Woman Near Death And Save Her Life

Upon arrival, Police Officers found an 18-year-old woman suffering from severe injuries. Police Officers immediately rendered medical assistance to the woman, who then was transported to University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, for treatment for critical injuries. During the initial investigation, Lata-Sanchez was taken into custody at the scene and formally charged.

“I hope this sentence can provide some assurance to the victim and her family, as well as the community, that we will not tolerate these egregious offenses and will expend all of our efforts to bring offenders to justice,” expressed Prosecutor Daniel. “I commend the initial responding officers, Christina Pecorella, Victor Valdez, and Selvin Rubi, of the Elizabeth Police Department. Their swift actions upon arrival at the crime scene helped save the life of the victim. I also commend the excellent work of Union County Prosecutor’s Office Detectives Jose Lopez, Ayanna Kerr, and Sergeant Christopher Scuorzo on their investigation of this case.”
