Sunday, February 23, 2025, 9:30 A.M. ET. 3 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

SADDLE BROOK, NJ.- Earlier this week, a 53-year-old Hasbrouck, New Jersey, man was apprehended in less than 24 hours after he walked into an exotic bird store in Saddle Brook, New Jersey, and shot the owner of the store, a woman in the face with an arrow fired from a crossbow.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, as first reported, on Monday, February 17, 2025, shortly before 6:00 p.m., members of the Saddle Brook Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a woman being seriously injured at her place of employment, a store located on Route 46 in Saddle Brook, New Jersey.

Police Officers Find Store Owner Shot In The Face

Upon arrival, Police Officers found the store owner, an adult woman who had been shot in the face with an arrow. The woman was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a serious injury. The woman was treated and later released, surviving the attack.

During the initial investigation, Police Officers and Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit learned that the suspect, a man recognized as a previous customer, entered the store located at 104-106 Route 46 East in Saddle Brook and shot the woman in the face with the crossbow.

After being shot, a brief struggle ensued, and the female store owner was able to get the crossbow away from the suspect. The woman then ran from the store to a neighboring business to seek help, at which time the suspect fled the scene in a car that was parked outside the store.

Detectives Identify Carey As The Suspect

During a swift-moving investigation, Detectives were able to identify the vehicle involved and the suspect as Raymond M. Carey, 53, of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, and a manhunt was launched to locate Carey.

Accordingly, Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Saddle Brook Police Department, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Manchester Township Police Department, were able to determine Carey’s whereabouts.

On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, shortly before 1:00 p.m., less than twenty-four hours after the crossbow shooting, Carey was located and taken into custody in Pine Beach, New Jersey. Carey was then transported back to Bergen County, where he was formally charged with first-degree Attempted Murder; third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and fourth-degree Obstruction the Administration of Law.

After being processed on the charges, Carey was placed into the custody of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
