West Virginia Man Sentenced To Federal Prison

Parkersburg Man Heading To Federal Prison On Federal Gun Charge

CHARLESTON, W.VA.- A 43-year-old Parkersburg, West Virginia, Man will be spending the next four years in federal prison after being sentenced yesterday in federal court for possessing a firearm by a previously convicted felon.

     On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Charles Ray Mackey appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas E. Johnston to 48 months in federal prison, To be followed by three years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Convicted Felon.

     According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents Filed With The District Court, on November 16, 2023, members of the Parkersburg Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by Mackey. During a subsequent court-authorized search of Mackey’s vehicle, Police Officers found a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun. A subsequent records check on Mackey revealed that he had prior criminal felony convictions.

     Federal law prohibits a person with a prior felony conviction from owning or Possessing a firearm or ammunition. Mackey knew when he possessed the firearm on November 16, 2023. He was a prohibited person due to his prior felony convictions for non-aggravated Robbery, Assault during the commission of a felony upon a person 65 years of age or older, and conspiracy to commit non-aggravated robbery in Wood County Circuit Court in June 2021.

     Acting U.S. Attorney Johnston commended the investigative work of the Parkersburg Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
