CHARLESTON, W.VA.- Last Thursday, a 31-year-old Detroit, Michigan, man was sentenced to federal prison for his role in shipping nearly 20 pounds of methamphetamine and over 100 grams of fentanyl from California into the Southern District of West Virginia.

On Thursday, March 6, 2025, Edward Keith Perkins, 31, of Detroit, Michigan, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Joseph R. Goodwin to 180 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to Attempted Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.

According To The U.S. Attorney’s Office

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents filed with the District Court, on August 19, 2024, Perkins shipped a package containing around 4.43 kilograms of methamphetamine from California to a Virginia Street residence on the West Side of Charleston, West Virginia.

On August 22, 2024, during the continuing investigation into Perkins’s illicit narcotics distribution activities, federal, state, and local law enforcement investigators conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that Perkins was driving after investigators observed a passenger retrieving the package from the porch from the Virginia Street residence that had been shipped from California and placed into the trunk of Perkins’s vehicle.

During the traffic stop, as investigators approached the vehicle, Perkins jumped out and fled on foot but was later apprehended and charged.

During his plea allocution, Perkins admitted in court that the package contained 4.43 kilograms of methamphetamine and an additional 50 grams of fentanyl and that he intended to distribute the controlled substances throughout the Southern District of West Virginia and Tennessee.

In handing down the sentence last Thursday, Judge Goodwin noted Perkins’s extensive criminal history, including convictions for assault, carjacking, and carrying a concealed weapon.

“The investigation in the case revealed that the defendant distributed nearly 20 pounds of methamphetamine and over 100 grams of fentanyl that he shipped from California to West Virginia and Tennessee,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston. “Thursday’s sentence results from this office’s commitment to work closely with our law enforcement partners and prosecute these cases to the fullest extent to keep our communities safe.”
